Surveyed Accessible Parks

The following parks have been surveyed by HTC members and found to be completely or reasonably accessible for most disabled RVers. The survey form asks:

	is office wheelchair accessible
	is at least one site level and wide enough for wheelchair lift (20 feet)
	what hookups are available and wheelchair accessible
	is bathroom (toilet and shower) accessible
	is camp store accessible
	are pets allowed.

EVERYTHING acc. Separate restroom with roll-in shower. Has four level, fairly wide blacktop sites for wheelchair users. Owned by Terry and Gayle Rehkop, HTC members. Park is in the Sierras east of Chico at the 3200-foot elevation.

Office & store acc. No info. on restrooms or h/u’s. Many gravel sites wide and level. Pets OK.

Craig's RV Park, Arcadia

EVERYTHING acc. with separate bathroom including roll-in shower, no seat. Concrete patios, wide sites. Small store, pets OK.

Secret Lake RV Resort Disneyworld Area, Kissimmee

EVERYTHING acc. including 3 of the 6 bathrooms. Most sites wide & level. Wheelchair acc. pool, fishing pier, porch, restaurant, laundry.

S. M. Park, Stone Mountain, outside of Atlanta

EVERYTHING acc. Sites 151 through157 next to toilet/shower with 30” doors. Store, pets OK. No reservation. For specific sites call and tell them you need handicapped site #151.

Mississippi Palisades St. Park, Savanna, IL/IA border

Six huge concrete sites with just elec. H/u acc. Dump at exit. Acc. toilets/roll-in showers (no seat) close to some sites. Store acc. Pets OK.

Bixler Lake Campground
Kendaville

The interior roads are hard-packed gravel, all spaces are grass. Most are level with electric and water available. Wheelchair acc. restrooms and showers. 219-347-9941

Hartwick Pines State Park

Jct. of I-75 & Hartwick Pines Rd (M-93), exit 259 from I-75, N.E. 2 miles on Hartwick Pines Rd., 4216 Ranger Rd., Grayling, MI 49738, 989-348-7068 (in Michigan's upper lower peninsula). 100 sites, office w/c acc., sites 52, 54, 86, 87 and others are acc., wide enough for w/c lift & level. Concrete. Some hook-ups w/c acc, restrooms acc. Leashed pets allowed. Paved sites in center have most full hook-ups; wooded sites on perimeter have electric, not all wooded sites have water & sewer. Paved roads throughout, Center sites not as private as wooded; clean throughout. Friendly couple are hosts - one is amputee & both were helpful. 2 small lakes accessible by car 5 minutes away, have accessible fishing docks. Beautiful paved trail (Virgin Pines Trail), 5 minutes away by car. Large accessible reception center/nature center/gift shop is within grounds of the Virgin Pine Trail. Trail leads to "encampment" of several log buildings from CCC era - not restored as museums to browse through; these are accessible.

Petoskey KOA, US 31 N, 1/2 mile north of junction of US 31 N and M 119, Petoskey www.petoskeykoa.com

In NW lower peninsula of Mich. Office access (ramp in rear of building not visible upon arrival). Many access. sites, (170,176, 146, 29 are a few), some hook-ups have to be accessed by wheeling around a curb the length of some sites. Grounds mainly concrete. Restrooms, camp store accessible. Pets allowed. 2002 Trailer Life ratings 9/10/10. Interior roads, blacktop - 1/2 campsites blacktop with cement patio, 1/2 gravel. Spotlessly clean. W/C accessible shower w/shower chair (too low & not adjustable) in office, public restrooms accessible.

America's Best Campground, 499 Buena Vista Rd., Branson

Everything accessible, paved roads, hard packed stone sites. Wide & level w/concrete patio for lift. Store. Pool area acc., no lift/ramp into pool.

Albuquerque KOA Central

Has one concrete site specifically constructed for wheelchairs. Bathrooms not acc. Reserve the site by calling 1-800-562-7781.

Smoky Mountain National Park

Office & kiosk has curb – just holler! Sites A30 and A44 acc. Restrooms acc. Elec. & water acc. Dump station in park. No store, pets OK.

Holliday RV Park, Phoenix

All acc. except shower (1 step & narrow door). Pets OK sites. Paved but narrow, lift would be on grass or dirt. Outlet Mall next door. Tiny store at office.

Memaloose State Park between Portland & The Dalles

Everything acc. But didn’t check restrooms. Store, pets OK. Lifts will open onto grass.

Austin Lone Star RV Resort, Austin

Office accessible. Site # 80 wide enough for wheelchair lift. Level concrete. Hook-ups, hosts available to help. Restrooms fully acc. Camp store acc. Pets ok. Hosts very helpful.

Sunset Point on Lake LBJ, Marble Falls

Office is accessible. Most sites are level concrete, width is questionable. Hook-ups grassy but flat. Restrooms fully accessible. Camp store accessible. Pets ok.

Lady Bird Johnson Municipal RV Park,
Fredericksburg

Office not accessible. Site # 81,A & B wide enough for WC lift, level, hook-ups accessible. Gravel & grass. Restrooms not accessible. Pets ok. Working on ADA improvements.

Grand Prairie/Trader's Village between Dallas/Ft. Worth (similar one in Houston)

EVERYTHING acc. 32” doors in separate bathroom w/shower. Some concrete sites too narrow, but often you can use 2. Also have wider sites w/patio and grass. Next door to acc. huge Trader’s Village.

Great Smoky Mts. National Park

	Elkmont Camping Area, TN side near Gatlinburg, acc. sites A1 & A2, wide enough for w/c lift but might land on grass, level, concrete & grass. Paved path from site to restrooms. No h/u's but acc. water spigot & fountain behind restroom. 1st restroom near ranger station is acc, no showers, acc. phones outside restrooms. No store. Can reserve sites from 5/15 through 10/30.
	Cades Cove Camping Area, Townsend, TN south of Elkmont camping area. Ofc., camp store w/c. acc., acc sites are HC1 & HC2, others are flat but further from restroom wide enough for w/c lift, level, concrete w/gravel tent pad. No h/u's, toilet and door widths accessible, no shower. Pets allowed
	Cosby Campground, off 321 north of Gatlinburg, TN. Office w/c access, site #36 & 40 wide enough for w/c lift, level, concrete except for tent pad. No h/u's. Restrooms access., no showers. No camp store, one right outside entrance to campground. Pets on leach allowed. A little hilly but not a problem, paved walkway to bathrooms.

Mountain View RV Park Van Horn, western Texas

Sites gravel w/grass, #111 & #112 wide enough for lift, close to acc. toilets (no acc. shower). Office/store acc. Pets OK.

Zion River Resort

Shenandoah National Park

Luray. Ofc., camp store & restaurant w/c acc. Acc RV only sites: P35, T16, Y24. R56 is walk-in tent site w/paved path. Sites wide enough for w/c lift, combo concrete & grass. No h/u's, has dumping station. Restrooms accessible, showers in separate area, coin operated, special handicapped one. Coin laundry near showers. Accepts reservations5/15-10-31. Paved bike trails scooters can go on.

Ft. Canby State Park Ilwaco

EVERYTHING acc. except sewer h/u. Have wheelchair site. No store, pets OK.

Pioneer RV, Long Beach

Ofc. And restrooms not acc. H/u’s are acc. Tell them you need wide site for w/c lift. No store, pets OK. Helpful manager and owners. Nice tourist town.

Van Mall, Vancouver

Ofc. and restrooms acc. H/u’s are on gravel. Sites are wide at one end, narrow at other. May work for some rigs with lifts.

Yakama Nation RV, 280 Buster Rd., Toppenish

125 sites, some pull thrus wide sites concrete w/grass/gravel, sep. h/c restrooms all accessible, no store, pets allowed. Pool, meeting rooms, BBQ area, casino (good food), laundry.

Babcock State Park, HC 35, Box 150, Clifftop 25831

In southern WV. Office accessible, site 23 is level, concrete & wide enough for a w/c lift. Elec. h/u. Restrooms have access toilet stall, shower (with grab bars & shower seat), & door widths. No camp store. Cats & dogs on leach OK. Accessible cabins available.

Blackwater Falls State Park, P.O. Drawer 490, Davis

In eastern WV in scenic mountains of Potomic Highlands area. Office not access., sites #55, 54 & 57 wide enough for w/c lift, level, concrete. Elec. h/u's. The 3 handicapped sites had keys to a restroom building with access toilet, shower, sink & huge roll-in shower, path to restroom unpaved & bumpy. Accessible "trading post". Cats & dogs allowed on leash. Lodge has few accessible rooms, some accessible cabins. Accessible trail to a viewing platform of falls.

Bluestone State Park, HC 78, Box 3, Hinton 25951

In SE WV. Office accessible, several access sites, level, grass, elec H/U, restrooms have access. toilets, showers, door widths, sink, grab bars. Cats & dogs on leash OK. Lovely regular campsites on river accessible fishing pier with picnic bench.

Greenbrier State Forest, HC 30, Box 154, Caldwell

In SE WV off Route 64. Office not w/c access, pay post is. A few sites wide enough for w/c lift, some level, grounds are gravel. Electric h/u's only and are accessible. Restrooms (inc. toilet stall, shower - with hand rail, no seat) are access with adequate door widths. Pets on leash OK

Holly River State Park, P.O. Box 79, Hacker Valley 26222

In mid WV, east of 79. Main office accessible, sites 10, 7, 8 wide enough for w/c lift, level, concrete, elec h/u's, some other sites are flat. Restrooms: access. toilet stall, door widths, no slider for shower head, needs shower seat, plenty of room. Dogs & cats on leash OK. Nice home-cooked meals in restaurant, small & accessible. Access. cabins available.

Pipestone State Park, Route 20, Box l50, Pipestone 25979

In SE WV near Beckley. Ofc. w/c access. Site A1 wide enough for w/c lift, other sites level, grounds are concrete. Elec/water/sewer h/u's are accessible. Restrooms accessible with separate handicapped family bathroom with roll-in shower with seat. No camp store; few camp items in office. Pets on leash OK. Accessible rooms in lodge, cabins, restaurant, has golf course, miniature golf, horseback riding, swimming, fishing.

Twin Falls State Park, Rt. 97, Box 1023, Mullens, WV 25582

In SE WV near Beckley, WV. Office w/c access. for self pay, Site #7 wide enough for w/c lift, some others OK, level, concrete & grass, no water or sewer h/u, electric h/u w/c access., restrooms: toilet stall, shower (no seat) & door widths accessible. Camp store access, pets allowed on leach, some lodge rooms.

Watoga State Park, HC 82, Box 252, Marlinton, WV 24954-9550

Mid-east portion of state, off Route 219. Ofice w/c access, site #12 wide enough for lift & level, grounds are concrete. Elec. h/u only are accessible. Restrooms no shower, access toilets & door widths. Other access sites in Riversite Campground are 30, 32, 33 (no electric). Camp store, cabins, restaurant & gift shop accessible. 17 trails, sites #16 & 19 accessible, swimming, horseback riding

Jasper National Park, Whistlers Campground, 1 mile S of Jasper on Highway 93 - the "Icefield Parkway"

Site 51G is wide, level, 100 feet from "the best handicapped equipped bathroom we have ever seen in a park." A person alone would probably need some help with the hook-ups. Geoff Danks from Canadian Park Service was very helpful (Geoff_Danks@pch,gc.ca). Close to Athabasca Falls, Lake Meligne, Mt. Edith Cavell & Jasper Tramway (accessible).

The following RV parks have been reported to be accessible. We have not specifically checked them out based on HTC criteria (flat, hard, 20-foot-wide sites, easy hookups, etc.). We hope you will do so when the opportunity arises and then report back to us.>/span>

AZ	River Island State Park, near Parker AZ, about 10 miles north of town and on the Colorado River. The campground itself is level, although there are trails leading into the surrounding hills. The restrooms are in excellent condition and handicapped accessible.

AZ	Roosevelt Lake State Park, just east of Phoenix around Roosevelt Lake. Dry camping. Three campgrounds organized in circles. Each circle includes two handicapped campsites which are close th the bathrooms and are paved. Also paved are areas around the fire rings and the walks to the bathrooms. Boat launching available and warm water fishing abounds. Hot country; plan your trip during the cooler times of the year.

CA	Caliente Springs RV Resort, 70-200 Dillon Rd., Desert Hot springs, CA 92241; res: 1-888-894-SPAS; calientesp@aol.com. Beth & Pete Klein. Hot mineral pools - main pool has a lift!

CA	Santa Cruz KOA, Santa Cruz, CA; 1-800-562-7701. Site #222 is designated as a handicapped site. It is asphalt and has a handicapped accessible table.

CO	Hidden Valley Ranch and Campground; PO Box 220, Coaldale, CO 81222; attention Chuck Greenwood, 719-942-4171; cwsmac@aol.com. The park has 25 level full hook-up sites, several wheelchair friendly primitive tent sites, and three cabins with ramps and 36" doors.

MI	Michigan State Parks; 1-800-44PARKS; www.michigandnr.com. Look for "Wheelchair Access" link on web site. Promotes "Universal accessibility" and the number of accessible outdoor recreation facilities is increasing every year. Parks with at least one universally accessible feature are designated in the "Michigan Recreation & Camping Guide" (call for a copy) parks grid with the wheelchair symbol and can include accessible registration areas, campsites, hook-ups, picnic tables, fire rings, restrooms, water, visitor centers, hunting, fishing, hiking and more. Call specific park for details.

OK	Oklahoma State Parks - an HTC member reports that every campground in every state park in Oklahoma has special RV pad sites marked for handicapped parking. As far as was known, they are all with full hook-ups and close to bathhouse facilities with ramps and paved pathways. Valid handicapped parking permits from any state are acceptable.

Also accessible: spa, meeting rooms, basketball court, tennis court, volleyball, horse shoe pits & nature trails.
